Everyone loves saving money, cutting back, and reducing expenses. However, sometimes there is a tendency to focus on the wrong things. While you’re busy feeling good about reducing little costs here and there, every once in a while you neglect the larger picture, and caused great damage to the purchaser and supplier.
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Rite Aid is recalling the rechargeable handheld fans after receiving two reports of the lithium battery overheating while charging and emitting smoke. No injuries have been reported.
Propane heaters being recalled due to burn hazard
The recall involves portable rechargeable handheld fans sold in blue, pink, and purple colors. The fans have a one-touch button with three speeds and weigh about 8.8 oz. The item number 9050103 can be found on the product box and on a sticker on the backside of the fan itself.
CPSC officials said the fans were sold at Rite Aid stores nationwide from April 2021 through June 2021 for about $10.
What causes a hand-held charging fan to overheat?
- The cheap price low-end hand-held fan, charging circuit design is too simple, the lack of efficient battery management system (BMS), the product used in charge, or internal metal parts lead to external short circuit batteries, not temperature, electric current and voltage of lithium-ion battery monitoring and management, such as possible battery “overheating”, constitute a fire and explosion hazard.
- In order to save costs, the manufacturer chooses the battery with low quality. In actual use, the material is prone to adverse chemical reactions under the mode of environmental change or abuse (overcharge, impact and external short circuit, etc.), leading to “overheating”, resulting in fire and explosion.
- Some hand-held charging fans are equipped with 18650 lithium ion batteries in bulk. These batteries have bare metal anode and negative electrode, which may cause external short circuit when they come into contact with metal objects (such as keys and coins). Once short-circuited, bulk batteries may overheat and have thermal runaway, resulting in fire and explosion of battery internal materials, resulting in personal injury.
Friendly Reminder:
Domestic small electronic consumer products export enterprises should pay attention to the United States reported the CPSC to recall in time, strict control of UL standards for American exports handheld type charging products for product design and safety evaluation, perfect products “thermal management performance,” do not simplify circuit design or configuration of inferior battery in order to save costs, increase the risk of recall; At the same time, do not export the consumer goods with lithium-ion batteries in bulk to the United States, so as not to suffer the loss of products off the shelf.
